South Carolina football coach honors word, gets hit in head with cooler after bowl win

College football fans who hoped to see the winning head coach of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl between North Carolina and South Carolina Thursday have mayonnaise dumped on them got their wish. Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer took one for his team after defeating Mack Brown and the Tar Heels, as Beamer was showered with more than four gallons of mayonnaise as part of the postgame celebration.

It was perhaps a more painful experience than Beamer could have envisioned, too. Footage of the mayonnaise bath showed Beamer getting hit the back of the head with the container holding the mayonnaise before he embarked on one of the more messier celebrations ever featured in a bowl game.

According to Ben Portnoy, Beamer didn’t mince his words about the mayo bath after either.

“It was awful, to be honest with you,” Beamer said. “I’ve got mayo in my pockets. I’ll be getting mayo off me for months.”

The win capped off a 7-6 season in Year 1 of the Beamer era at South Carolina. The Tar Heels concluded their season at 6-7. A two-quarterback game system helped South Carolina roll up more than 500 yards of offense. Dakereon Joyner, who was named MVP of the game, completed 9 of 9 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 64 yards over 10 carries. The wide receiver hadn’t attempted a pass since 2019, when he began transitioning from quarterback to wide receiver. It got some excited for the possibilities Beamer will have with Spencer Rattler under center next season.

Parker White becomes Gamecocks’ all-time points leader

South Carolina kicker Parker White set a Gamecocks record during the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against North Carolina. With a 30-yard field goal to put his team up 18-0 with 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter, he became the program’s all-time leader in points with 360. He passed former Gamecocks kicker Elliot Fry’s record of 356 points.

A five-year player for the Gamecocks, the Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, native connected on 13 of 14 field goals this season and hit all 27 of his extra points entering Thursday’s game. For his career, he has hit 69 of 96 field goals and 149 of 151 extra points.

South Carolina entered its bowl game with a 6-6 record.

North Carolina vs South Carolina: Duke’s Mayo Bowl Prediction, Game Preview

North Carolina came in to the season thinking ACC Championship, but instead it’s here after not stringing together back-to-back wins since mid-September.

– It’s a maddeningly inconsistent Tar Heel team with way too many strange early season losses. The ground game picked it up late in the year – the Tar Heels led the ACC in rushing offense – but it wasn’t enough agains the good teams on the back half of the schedule.

– The offensive line is shaky – there’s NO pass protection – and there were way too many penalties overall, but the team should catch a break against a Gamecock team with a questionable offense and with massive third down problems on both sides of the ball.

– North Carolina might have been disappointed with its season, but 6-6 was a great run for South Carolina in head coach Shane Beamer’s first year.

– The Gamecocks pulled off stunning wins over Florida and Auburn – overcoming an attack that didn’t get more than 250 yards in three of its last give games – thanks to a defense that forces a slew of takeaways and with just enough of a rushing attack to get by.
