Matt Reeves cast Paul Dano to play Riddler in The Batman . Reeves says of Paul Dano and his election as Ridler:

Matt Reeves’ approach to action scenes, just like the rest of the film, is a very realistic one. Reeves continues:
“He [Batman] has been beating the criminals outside every night for two years, and he has been beaten, he has been shot, he has been fired upon by them. Empire: When you got this role, what research did you do to better understand this character and immerse yourself in this role?
Kreutz: The only Batman comic we talked about a lot with Matt was Frank Miller’s Batman Year One comic; So I had a special focus on this story. Katouman is considered a symbolic character and there is a lot of information about him in comic books. Numerous adaptations of Katowoman have been made, and there are differing views on these adaptations. When I was researching this role, I said to myself that you know what, you can find any information you want from Katooman in that comic (Batman Year One). And, of course, the script was enough to get me to know a cat woman. Matt did a really nice job and I did not want to overwhelm my brain with information about Katowoman.
Empire: In your opinion, did your experience with the voice acting of Katooman in The Lego Batman Movie help you to get acquainted with this character?
Kreutz : Well, when I said “Miu Miu” in that movie, I thought it was a good rehearsal for me [laughs]. That project certainly helped shape the relationship between me and Selena Kyle, and I welcome that.
Empire: Matt [Reeves] has already mentioned that you added a bunch of ideas you had about Katowoman to the film; Like Selena’s passion for keeping street cats. Can you explain a bit about them?
: Yes, I really wanted to know the human aspects of Selena Kyle. There’s a really great part to the movie where you see Selena Kyle taking care of a whole street cat. I really wanted to go into the psychological depths of this issue and show the audience in the film why she has to take care of so many cats. When you watch the movie, you will fully understand why Selena is doing this. As an actor, when we are given a role, we are usually all nodding [in favor of the director’s approval] and saying ‘yes sir’, but in this film I tried to do something different; It was a wonderful situation for me. Even though I had the script, I was always giving my ideas to Matt so that he would have a general idea of how to work with me. Matt has a great passion for teamwork and added a lot of my ideas to my film.
Empire: Can you describe Selena as a deadly seducer (a special type of female character in literary works, especially French noir films also known as seductive women)?
Kreutz: That’s interesting. The Batman movie is supposed to tell the story of Selena’s evolution and her transformation into an actress. Selena wants to know herself beyond trying to survive, and I think this film gives Selena a lot of room for growth and development. I think in this movie we see how Selena becomes a deadly seducer / seductive woman and I’m sure Selena becomes such a character.
Empire: How did you cope with the physical characteristics (existence of the fight sequences) of the film? I think you have spent a lot of time practicing martial arts.
Kreutz: Rob Alonzo was in charge of the stunt department, and in terms of the way the characters were treated, his point of view is really close to Matt. He does not just bring a few acrobatic moves in the scenes to impress the audience; Movements that may be difficult for actors to perform. To design action scenes, he considers the place of the characters and their emotions in the story. That’s why it was really fun to work with him and move in this creative direction. We looked at how lions and cats fought, we also considered my size and physical characteristics, and we said to ourselves, well, Batman is really stronger; So Katouman’s struggles must be a combination of quick and cunning moves. We practiced interesting movements that resembled a combination of cat movements, martial arts, and dance.
Empire: Can you tell us about the long nails that were intended for your character? Of course, most of them become claws rather than ordinary nails.
Kreutz: They had very, very long nails for Katwomen. These nails were permanently embedded in my fingers, and consider that I had to live with these insanely long claws. They were very beautiful and very important to the character. But not letting me open something and washing my face became a really scary thing for me! These claws had made life hell for me! [Laughs]
Empire: Do you think acting in Batman was a difficult experience for you?
Kreutz: Yes. Filming in the cold, while you have to wear a leather jacket, is really hard when it is raining on your head and you have to look very hot and cry at the same time. We had a lot of work to do and it was one of the hardest things I did in my career. But there was not a moment to say to myself, is all this really worth it? Well, I think that’s a good sign.
Emperor’s next interview, however, is devoted to a conversation with Paul Dano. Paul Dano plays Riddler (riddle) in the film; Edward Nigma (Neshton) who gradually becomes a killer genius. Dano: You know, I’m not a busy, noisy person. I’m more of a calm person and “Oh my God, damn it!” I am !! But to be honest, I had to think about this movie very carefully before reading the script. After reading the script, I realized that the project was entrusted to the right person [Matt Reeves]. Matt introduced me to Riddler by showing me different adaptations of this character. Riedler is a scary character and I think that’s very exciting; Because it makes us have the opportunity to do interesting things with it.
Empire: And what interesting things did you do with it?
Dano: Ridler’s character is all about mental gameplay, questions, puzzles and various challenges. The person who always has the upper hand and the main issue in this interview is that you are going to have a hard time with me because Riddler should always have the upper hand; That’s why I do not want to share too much information with him. But one thing that has always been on my mind is how Matt comes up with this character and portrays the psychological damage in various forms. You know, there are some people who use fire to do good deeds, and some do not. I think we explored a very strong topic.
Empire: Matt had said that one of the most important sources of inspiration for Ridler’s character design in this film was the killer zodiac. Did you go to this character while researching to meet Ridler?
Dano: Yes, of course; But the zodiac was not my first and last source. The film’s realism is really a great move, and there are real things like the zodiac for inspiration, right? But this movie is still a cinematic adaptation of “Batman” and that’s a bigger issue for me. So it was important for me to allow my imagination to react to the script beyond being inspired by similar things.
Empire: How did it feel to wear Ridler for the first time? A dress that Riddler himself seems to have put on.
Dano: Ridler’s cover was really tense. Thinking of the materials that created such clothing really scares me; Because Riddler’s costume was really more complex and heavier than what we could have created. When you wear such a dress, there is a way to let the dress talk to you and say something to your body. There is always a way to let this dress live with you. Working with Riddler’s costume was a really powerful experience.
Empire: Are you also interested in solving puzzles and brain teasers?
Dano : If I want to be honest, I have to say no, it’s very embarrassing [laughs], but well, I really put the finishing touches on this film. An interesting thing about Riddler’s character is that you feel satisfied solving a puzzle, but Riddler can get that feeling from other places as well. That’s why puzzles are so dear to me, even if they are complicated.

Ferrell : The news of Matt’s desire to talk to me about the Penguin character came to me, and I was really excited. I had not read the script yet, but that part of the child inside me was strangely excited about the possibility of playing a penguin.
Empire: Matt talked about being inspired by Fordow’s character in the Godfather series for the penguin adaptation. Did you know that he has such a thing in mind?
Ferrell: The saw was talking to me about Fordow. Because Fordow was in a family surrounded by strong, violent, capable, and promising members, and this led to his betrayal. Because he was weak, he was almost broken and always in pain. There is such a rift in the depths of the penguin character that it causes it to strive for growth in Gotham’s crime world. Empire: How did it feel to run a penguin under that heavy makeup?
Ferrell : Matt had the classic Penguin look for this character. When the filming of The North Water, for which I had to gain weight, came to an end, Matt Bahman said that my physical condition was excellent for the role of a penguin. I told him to say goodbye to this shape and image of me because I want to go to the club so that my body can return to health. That’s why we decided to try another way to visualize the fat and classic look of a penguin. That’s why one day I went to see Mike Marino , the film’s makeup designer. Mike and his amazing team of artists designed a costume to make me look fat, and then we went to face makeup. Combining this imagery with the training of Jessica Drake , the art coach for the project, turned me into the same penguin in the studio that Matt had in mind. That day was extraordinary.
Empire: Wasn’t this volume of makeup uncomfortable or restrictive for you at all?
Ferrell: Quite the opposite. This dress and makeup moved with a small gesture from me. Look, this dress had its own weight, but I got used to it very quickly. It did not bother me at all. The fattening clothes warmed up and sweated, but it never bothered or restrained me. Being in this costume was like getting rid of my body and reaching the character of a penguin. I had never experienced this amount of closeness and sense of ownership to any character. This is not an exaggeration at all, and was more of a group effort to travel on the path to a character. “It was a wonderful team work.”
