While Vince McMahon has refrained from discussing why there have been so many job cuts, WWE president Nick Khan gave his side of things in an interview with Ariel Helwani during SummerSlam weekend last August.

“I don’t know that there’s one explanation for it,” Khan said. “I think ultimately what’s looked at is, is this person — for us — going to move the needle now, or in the imminent future. So, by the way, we had a tryout, a two-day tryout in Las Vegas which ended yesterday.

Which Triple H, and Johnny Laurinaitis, and Bruce Prichard were all across, as were the rest of us. We’ve signed over a dozen new talent coming out of that tryout. And I’m not suggesting, “Oh that’s why we cut the other talent.” But we’re always looking for what’s next. We live in the present, we live in the future. We don’t live in the past. So when people leave, and they move on with their life and their careers? That’s good by us. For us, it’s what works for us and our product at that moment in time, and again, what’s gonna work down the road. And largely in part the existing roster is based on that.”

In 2022, there is still an exodus from WWE as far as wrestlers in backstage talent go–after seeing over 80 wrestlers get released last year. So far, there haven’t been as many releases as we’ve seen in previous months, but that’s also because wrestlers are leaving the company on their own accord, and WWE is granting those releases as well.

The latest wrestler to quit the WWE is none other than Cesaro, which PWInsider reported on February 24. The King of Swing had been working with WWE for 11 years, but he’s not the most tenured on-screen presence to leave the company. Spanish announced Carlos Cabrera was fired one week prior. He has been on WWE television since 1993.

Overall, WWE has been releasing plenty of on-air talent, from wrestlers, to referees, to general managers. These releases have been especially devastating for NXT, seeing the releases of both William Regal and Jesse James. Throughout the year, we’ll keep you updated with wrestler releases as they happen. We’ll also keep you updated on wrestlers who are granted their releases.

As of this writing, this list is at 11. Typically, we’re only including in-ring talent releases for this list, so backstage employees, producers, writers, and coaches won’t be added, unless they were used as wrestlers or were extremely notable.
